Title: "Mandala", 2004
Notes: When I saw this photo, the first impression I got was of a mandala.
But later I took a closer look. I noticed then that the image is clearly
skewed, and contains only flawed symmetry. Mandalas are supposed to
be symmetrical. I meditated on it anyway though, and realized something:
I was thinking in two dimensions, but really this image is only like
a shadow of the three dimensional object it depicts. The shot was taken
of a chandelier, from below. The actual chandelier hangs completely
in balance, and isn't asymmetrical at all. It became clear to me then
that the mandala's imperfections stem not from the mandala (the chandelier)
itself, but rather from the -perspective- from which I took the shot
(off-center). So by remembering a higher dimension (the third), I was
able to see that imperfection is merely an illusion created by viewpoint,
never a reality. This parable would not have come into being if I had
taken the shot "correctly" either; so even my mistake was perfect.
