Title: "The Journey"

Date: 2004

Artist: Shawn Foote

Media: Pencil on paper

Artist Statement: This drawing was inspired by the Mary Oliver poem The Journey. Says Shawn: "This poem hits some good chords with me and I'm sure it speaks to others as well. My picture tries to present this feeling of traveling from the dark stormy night into the night filled with the light of the stars. 'It was already late enough...' shows that we all have been there and we all needed to push on before it gets too late. 'But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as you own...'. This is my favorite part of the poem. This part to which sheds the light is your own voice which you already recognize and which you are already familiar with. We all can recognize this voice for it is the voice of Ourself.
